FRANCISCO BAY AREA NEWSLETTER NOMINATIONS FOR OFFICERS FOR 2006 The FFSFBA club’s board of directors met October 30 and voted to declare September’s election invalid (because the procedures had not followed the requirements set forth in the Bylaws), and to restart the process. President Joy Hewett appointed a new nominating committee, comprised of Dean Batchelder, Diane Demo, and Roger Riffenburgh. This committee proposes the following slate of officers to serve for 2006: Additional nominations may be made from the floor on the day of the election, provided you have the nominee’s permission. Voting will take place at a brief business meeting at 12:30 p.m. on December 4, preceding the Holiday Luncheon. (Read Gail Boyd’s article in this newsletter for more details about the December 4 event.) JAPANESE EXCHANGE REPORT We welcomed nine guests from Osaka, Japan in late August. The Greenwalds hosted the welcome party at their lovely home with a beautiful view of San Francisco. One of the visiting ambassadors, Mami, treated us to a piano performance, as well as accompanying the Japanese group as they sang a few songs for us. We took our guests to lunch at Filoli followed by a tour of the home and gardens, which was well received. Another fun thing some of us did was a progressive dinner in place of a pot luck dinner. They loved seeing all the different homes. We had a wonderful farewell dinner at The Olive Garden. Our guest speaker was Palo Alto councilwoman Yoriko Kishimoto, who spoke to us in both English and Japanese. We were sad to see our new friends leave so soon. —Darlene Boyanich and Roger Riffenburgh INCOMING EXCHANGE FROM AUSTRALIA, JUNE 2006 We have the enjoyment of hosting an incoming exchange from Canberra, Australia in the first/second week of June 2006. I have already been in communication with the ED. They are getting organized to come and visit us. Put this on your calendars and plan to participate. It will be a fun time. At the luncheon December 4 there will be sign-up lists for hosting, potluck dinners, and other committee opportunities. Think about what you want to do and be sure to put down your name. The first meeting for participants will be held in January. —Katharine Kleinke, Exchange Director MILWAUKEE EXCHANGE On October 25, ten ambassadors arrived from Milwaukee for an activity-filled five days. Everybody involved had a good time until their departure on October 29. The Milwaukee club has invited us for a reciprocal visit sometime next year, preferably in late July when there are festivals, etc., that we might enjoy. It sounds like a fun time, so check your calendars and be prepared to sign up at our Holiday Luncheon. —Louise Heiduck FFSFBA HOLIDAY LUNCHEON AND GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING After all the wonderful responses by the seventy-two attendees of last year’s luncheon, the committee decided to have a repeat performance at Michaels Restaurant at Shoreline, Mountain View. By this time you should have received (by separate mailing) your reservation form for the General Meeting/ Holiday Luncheon, which will be held on Sunday, December 4, at 12 noon 'til 3 p.m. There will be an important business meeting at 12:30 p.m., just before lunch. Please try to come early to have plenty of time to socialize with new and old friends. Barry Rader and Karen McCready, and Steve and Lois Smallwood will provide the program. They will share their Friendship Force adventures to Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. Traditional caroling will be led by a club member. Please send me your reservations by November 26. Bring your friends and family to share in the festive occasion of holiday fun. For more information, call me. —Gail Boyd DIRECTIONS TO MICHAELS RESTAURANT AT SHORELINE Follow Highway 101 to Mountain View. Exit on North Shoreline toward the Bay. Follow the road 2.1 miles, past an usually unoccupied entry gatehouse and through the park and golf course until you reach a parking lot and Michaels Restaurant. For specific directions from your home, use your favorite online map and directions service. Michaels address is 2960 No. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View, CA 94043, and the telephone number is 650-962-1014. FFSFBA BOARD CONSIDERS OUTGOING EXCHANGE DIRECTOR (OED) POLICY I have been in the club for almost four years now, and the policy dictating what the outgoing exchange director (OED) is responsible for and how he or she should be compensated changes with every exchange. During the three years I have served on the FF Board, this policy discussion comes up every year and it gets tabled or ignored. The Board has committed itself to solving the problem at the first meeting of 2006. What is at issue in this policy? In the past few years, on trips to Japan, Australia, Canada, and Atlanta, no two exchanges followed the same guidelines. Some OEDs received no compensation while others received full compensation. (Note that the number of ambassadors on these exchanges varied widely.) All the OEDs, and I talked to them all, said there should be compensation. I just returned from a 26-day FFI trip to South America,* and the OED received 5% of her costs from every member on the exchange. The OED gives 6 to 9 months of his or her life to the success of the trip, plus dealing with any problems that occur along the way. If you have comments or ideas on these issues, contact Karen McCready or Barry Rader. * If you want to hear more about the trip, come to the Holiday Luncheon on December 4 in Mountain View. The Smallwoods and Rader/McCreadys will be providing the program. INTERVIEW WITH NEW MEMBER JULICE WINTER Carolyn Linnard introduced me to Friendship Force. She has told me about her trips and sharing the visits of people from around the world. I like the people-to-people aspect of travel with Friendship Force rather than travel just to see the sights. I am retired and live in Livermore. My two sons and their families also live here, so I am fortunate to be near my four grandchildren. I grew up in North Dakota and graduated from the University of North Dakota. People who live so far from the big cities know that they have to get out to see things. I have always liked to travel. I hope to enjoy the chance to travel with Friendship Force. —Julice Winter JIM TRACY JULY 1916–AUGUST 2005 Jim Tracy joined our Friendship Force Club in 1984, in time for our first outgoing exchange to New Plymouth, New Zealand. Jim and his wife Margaret traveled frequently, often with FF. Jim was very fit, bicycling 10 mile (each way) trips well into his 80’s. Jim was a thoroughly likeable person, always friendly, always positive—a model Ambassador for the Friendship Force. The following was adapted from Jim’s obituary as published in the Contra Costa Times on August 21. James Frueh Tracy passed away in Pleasanton, CA, on August 16, 2005. He was 89 years old. Mr. Tracy was born in San Pedro, Isle of Pines, West Indies, on July 29, 1916. The island was obtained by the U.S. from Spain after the Spanish American War. When control of the island reverted to Cuba in 1925, the Tracy family moved to the Carolinas, and then to Chicago (birth place of James’s mother) in 1929. Jim graduated in 1940 from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and was employed by General Electric in Schenectady, NY, working on microwaves and radar jamming. After six years with GE, he moved to California and obtained a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics from the University of California, Berkeley. He then worked for five months as a civilian Operations Analyst for the U.S. Army in Tokyo, Japan and Seoul, Korea at the end of the Korean War. In 1953 he was employed as a physicist at what became the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He retired from LLNL in 1983. Jim was active in a number of organizations, including First Church of Christ Scientist, Livermore; Livermore/Yotsukaido Sister City Organization; Apple Macintosh Computer Group at LLNL; Friendship Force of the San Francisco Bay Area; Boy Scouts, Y Indian Guides; and the Tri-Valley Macintosh Users Group. Jim also enjoyed skiing, camping, and hiking. He traveled extensively around the world and in the U.S. His hobbies included being a “gadgeteer” in his shop and taking photographs and home movies. Jim met his wife, Margaret Lelean Jory, in Berkeley and they were married in 1957. He is survived by his wife and his two sons, Stephen of Castro Valley and Douglas of Shingle Springs. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Lisa Tracy and his three grandchildren, James, Heather, and Kayla, all of Shingle Springs. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, William, and his sister, Marian Tracy Messman. The family will hold private services. Contributions in Mr. Tracy’s memory may be made to the First Church of Christ Scientist, Livermore, the Sierra Club, or a charity of your choice. PHOTOS OF THE INCOMING OSAKA, JAPAN EXCHANGE
