FRANCISCO BAY AREA NEWSLETTER A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello folks! We are expecting two incoming exchanges, one from Japan on August 22nd (Darlene Boyanich Exchange Director) and one from Milwaukee in October (Louise Heiduk E.D.), so be prepared to join in all the fun. They are both quite small, but packed with interesting things to do. Next year we will be hosting a group from Australia with Katharine Kleinke as E.D. We are still hoping to get an outbound exchange for next year, so keep your fingers crossed! We received a letter of gratitude from George Brown, thanking us for our contribution to the legacy fund, which will increase Friendship Force’s profile in other parts of the world. The F.F. International Conference will be held in São Paulo, Brazil, Nov. 3–6, followed by an optional homestay Nov. 6–10. Register by Sept. 2 to get the best price. For details, call me or use the web at http://www.friendshipforce.org. Can you believe it? The end of the year is fast approaching, which means it is time to think about our board for next year! Are there some people who would be willing to serve our club in this way? We also need a couple of people to serve on a nominating committee, so please let me know if YOU would like to help in either way. Please take time to thank your current board, as these folks spend lots of time to keep our club ‘chugging’ along. In Friendship, . . . —Joy Hewett, President@ffsfba.org INCOMING OSAKA, JAPAN EXCHANGE AUGUST 22–28 We have a fun week planned for our Japanese guests and hope everyone will participate. JAPANESE CULTURAL MEETING Alice Needham arranged a special meeting for us at the Japanese Consulate in San Francisco on July 13th. About 20 members attended. Mr. Kohut gave an interesting and passionate presentation on Japanese culture, history, and language. We learned that Japanese are not huggers, are fascinated by popping popcorn in the microwave, and like watching square dancing. Everyone seemed very pleased with the program. We certainly will feel better prepared for our visitors. —Darlene Boyanich, Japan Exchange Director WINNIPEG, CANADA EXCHANGE What a great time we had in the ‘Prairie’ Province of Canada. We were treated royally by the folks there, who took us to see many sights and kept us mighty busy! We went to an outside theater to see a live production of ‘Strike,’ a musical based on the terrible strike in Winnipeg; an Amish village; a fresh fish processing plant; a local cheese shop (with samples); and the Canadian Mint (no samples!) George Brown attended our farewell dinner and inspired us all to carry on with our message of peace. Those who did not go missed a wonderful exchange, so sign up for our next one, even though we don’t know where that will be. In Friendship, . . . —Joy Hewett, President@ffsfba.org INCOMING EXCHANGE FROM MILWAUKEE October 25–29 is a week you should add to your calendar for the year. At that time we will be entertaining visitors from Milwaukee. A committee is being formed to set up a program for them. If you are interested, please contact Louise Heiduk. If you are not able to help, please plan to attend the festivities and meet our visitors. GENERAL MEETING SEPTEMBER 11 It is time to spread the word to others to join Friendship Force. Please remember to bring family, friends, and/or neighbors to the September 11 meeting to enjoy good conversation and expose them to the many adventures members have experienced through our club activities. Light refreshments and soft drinks will be provided at the 2 p.m. meeting in the Community Room of the Los Altos Library. Have fun participating in the mini-Silent Auction. Several new garden items have been donated by Barry Rader and Karen McCready. The proceeds from the sale of these items will be donated to our club treasury. If you are a history buff, this would be a great opportunity to visit the Los Altos History Museum. It is the large gray building just beyond the library. It’s open Sunday 12–4 p.m.; admission is free.
Directions for the September 11 General Meeting: From northern parts of 880, take Dumbarton Bridge to 101 south. Exit on San Antonio Road west to Los Altos. Cross 82 (El Camino Real) and continue another mile, turning left into the Los Altos Library complex shortly after the police station, civic center, and intersection (traffic light) at Edith Ave. Park anywhere; several lots are available. Enter the library, then go left to the Community Meeting Room instead of going through the gates into the library proper. From 880 via Milpitas, take 23 7 toward Mt. View, exit onto 101 north, exit on San Antonio Road west, and proceed as above. From 280, exit at El Monte Ave. east toward Los Altos and the Bay. Go 1/2 mile then turn left on Foothill Expressway, and the next right onto San Antonio Road. Pass Hillview. Then turn right into the library complex and proceed as above.
HOLIDAY PARTY Believe it or not, the holidays are just around the corner. Mark your calendar to keep December 4 open for our annual Holiday Luncheon party. We will be going to Michaels at Shoreline Restaurant. More information to follow.
JULY 10 PICNIC Forty-four people attended our club’s annual picnic on July 10 at Prusch Park in San Jose, including five visitors: Lauren Michaels, Noriaki Nakao and Eunhee Kim, and John and Mary Pastrone. There was plenty of food and conversation, followed by a tour of the Friendship Forest to view the trees our club has planted during incoming exchanges to commemorate friendship between the two countries.
AREA GROUPS ACTIVITIES AREA COORDINATORS A pot-luck luncheon meeting of the Area Coordinators was held at the home of Karen McCready in Fremont on Thursday, July 21. In the absence of June Cademartori, Karen chaired the meeting. Several gatherings and trips were discussed. The next Coordinators Meeting will be at the home of Alice Needham in Fremont. It is being scheduled around the F.F. International Conference in Brazil, which takes place on November 3–6.
AN EXQUISITE SAMPLING OF TIBETAN TREASURES Nearly every FFSFBA area group was represented on Friday, August 5, when we toured “Tibet: Treasures from the Roof of the World” at San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum. Carolyn Linnard, Julice Winter, Laura Sternberg, Joanne and Norm Crane and friend Melissa, Katharine Kleinke, Eunhee Kim, Gail Boyd, Rita and Dick Hammer, Margaret and Pat Kingery, Barry Rader, and Karen McCready enjoyed an enlightening survey of Buddhist beliefs and rituals and viewed many precious artifacts garnered from the Dalai Lamas’ collection. Protected by the Chinese government, these antiquities are rarely displayed and may never be seen in the United States again. Our docent was particularly well informed and enthusiastic about the topic, keeping us enthralled for over an hour. Most of us BARTed in early to partake of some of the excellent Asian cuisine available in the museum’s Café Asia. Area groups 9 and 10 are happy that so many members were able to join us. You still have the opportunity to see the exhibit through September 11. Don’t miss it. Stay tuned for future details about Area 9 and 10 trips to KQED (for a tour) and to Oakland Zoo’s newly expanded Children’s Zoo. —Karen L. McCready
AREA 7 LUNCHEON Area 7 luncheon was a potluck BBQ in the San Jose backyard of Karen Mitchell and David Rice on Saturday, July 23, 2005. It must have been the hottest afternoon of the summer as eight Friendship Force members gathered under the newly erected canopy tent to share food and drinks and stories and laughter. Assembled were Janis Maurry, Norman and Joanne Crane, Laura Sternberg, Karen McCready, Barry Rader and the hosts. Later we moved inside to view a slide show of pictures from Karen Mitchell’s trip to Vietnam through a joint venture of National Peace Corps Association and Friendship Force during the first two weeks of July 2005. INTERVIEWS OF OUR NEWEST MEMBERS Diane Demo interviewed some of our new members and prepared these summaries. We hope to catch up with the rest of our new members in the next issue, so we can all get acquainted with them rapidly. FF members are interesting people! Margaret Connor I am pleased to be a member of FF. Just a summary of my background—I grew up in Ireland but have lived longer in the US. I received my BA from Harvard College and an MBA from the University of Chicago. With this, I moved west to work in Silicon Valley in a finance capacity with the High Tech industry. I have remained in this field and am currently the CFO at Entopia (you can view me on line under entopia.com). My interests are broad with travel being number one. In recent years, I have visited India, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, and the Scandinavian countries among others. Other interests include the performing arts, such as opera, symphony, ballet, theatre, and movies. Also, I love the outdoors, especially the mountains. I stay fit by hiking, skiing, and walking. Patricia Snowden I was born in Rangoon, Burma when it was still a colony of Great Britain. My ethnic background is English and Burmese. When Japan invaded Burma in 1941, my family was evacuated to India for the duration of World War II. We returned to Burma in 1946 and subsequently immigrated to the U.K. in 1952. I spent my young adult life in Welling, Kent, where I met and married Ray Snowden. We came to California in 1969. We have two children and four grandchildren. I have had a very happy and rewarding career as an executive secretary and later as an administrative supervisor for an engineering firm, from where I retired in 1996. Since then I have worked part-time for the president of a local bank and still work part-time for the Property Tax Collector’s office twice a year. I keep very active traveling every year with my friends and family. My most memorable trips include a cruise to the Scandinavian countries and also Russia and Estonia. Last year I went to Greece and Italy, and this year I spent one month in England visiting Cornwall and Kent and attending two weddings. No sooner were we back, when my friends and I went on a three-week road trip to New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada. So you can see, I have a passion for traveling. I have been to the South Island of New Zealand two times already, and count New Zealand as one of my favorite places in the world. I keep in good health and have never smoked. I am looking forward to joining the Friendship Force and making new friends. I will be joining Lori English on the exchange to New Zealand with the Los Angeles FF Club in September. Lori English I am 64 years old and divorced, with two beautiful daughters. In early September, one is opening a bar in Emeryville. The other lives in Santa Monica and is a Graphic Artist. Both are single. My mother lives in San Leandro. We get together a couple of times a week for movies and shopping. I am an only child. I heard about FF through one of my neighbors, who has been a member for 18 years. I live in Castro Valley and am a native Californian. My hobbies are tennis, bridge, movies, and traveling. I work part time at my tennis club in Hayward. In September I am going to New Zealand with the Los Angeles FF Club. Everyone has made me feel so welcome in the San Francisco Bay Area Friendship Force Club, and I look forward to being a part of FF activities. Nancy Barnoski I am a native Californian and have lived about equal amounts of time in Southern and Northern California. My late husband was an aerospace engineer who spent many years working at NASA Ames. Although retired now, I’ve always been involved in private and public education, at elementary, high school, and university levels. My last job was as coordinator for an Art Docent program in the Los Altos School District. I have one bonus daughter who lives in Phoenix. She and her husband have two children, a daughter who lives in Anderson CA, and a son who lives in Sebastapol. I enjoy museums. Among my favorites are the Phillips Collection, the Met, and The National Museum of American Art. American history is a favorite study with me. In early summer I traveled to Russia with Katharine Kleinke, a Friendship Force member, who introduced me to the organization. It was a most interesting trip. 2005 FFSFBA COMMITTEES EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE STANDING COMMITTEES EXCHANGE DIRECTORS SUPPORT COMMITTEES 2005 CALENDAR
